We have been so fortunate to have our school psychologist, Mrs. Bates, come and visit us on Tuesday afternoons! She has been spending time getting to know each student and presenting lessons on such things as feeling identification, social thinking, and self-regulation. Two weeks ago she read the book “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain and students colored a body outline (or a gingerbread man as they called it) to demonstrate where they feel certain feelings in their bodies. Last week, she introduced The Incredible Flexible You Social Thinking Curriculum. This curriculum aims to help students become problem solvers as well as develop students flexible social thinking. Below are pictures of students showing and sharing their thoughts to a sing-along in class.

First grade has been working very hard in the classroom! We are continuing to practice routines, and are getting to know each other. In Math, students are becoming familiar with tools they will be using later in the school year. They have been using pennies, dice, counters and more to play math games such as Top It, Penny Dice, and Number Line Hop. Ask students to show you how to play these games at home! Apple ScienceWe are dedicating the rest of September to apples! After students shared what they are already knew about apples, we took a moment to do some further research and collectively wrote our "new learning." In addition, First Graders created diagrams that depicted the different parts of an apple. In the next week or two we will begin discussing Johnny Appleseed! Open HouseOpen House for First Grade is tomorrow night, Thursday, September 18th. Students with a last name beginning with the letters A - K will attend from 6:00 - 6:50. Students with a last name beginning with the letters L-Z will attend from 7:10 - 8:00. Open House is in two separate sessions as our parking is limited. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Students are welcome to the Open House as are their siblings. I am looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow night!
We have begun Writer's Workshop, and students are enjoying sharing their true stories through illustrations and writing. Students are encouraged, as we have discussed that they are all writers and have a job to do! As writers, students are following four steps when starting a story; think, draw, label, write! After students have completed those four steps, they are to go back and add detail to their pictures. To do this students are acting as Superstar Illustrators! To become a Superstar Illustrator students are following these steps.
Hello FFES Families! First Graders first few days here at Federal Furnace have been wonderful! We are enjoying getting to know one another and are learning new routines. Students have been sent home with their yellow folders. Please keep in mind this folder will be a source of communication, and should be checked every night and sent back to school every morning. The front of the folder has some homework routines written on it, however, since we have yet to start our homework routine they are not applicable yet. :)
Sight word cards were also sent home last night. As I mentioned in the note I sent home, these cards will be used both in school and at home so please help your child remember to keep them in their folder. In addition, new sight words will be added weekly so please remember to encourage students to practice them every night! A few parents have already asked about volunteering, which I am thrilled to hear! I will be needing volunteers throughout the year for field trips, helping run-off papers, or coming in to read the class. Sign up sheets will be available at Open House. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you then! |
All About Mrs. SpidleHello Nathaniel Morton families! My name is Mrs. Spidle and this is my third year teaching at Nathaniel Morton Elementary. Before I joined the fabulous team at NMES, I taught first grade at Federal Furnace for three years and kindergarten for six years at Sacred Heart. I love working with children and believe in cementing their love for learning at a young age. I have an undergraduate degree in early childhood education and a master's degree in reading education. As an early childhood educator, I love teaching all subjects, but my first love is reading! I believe in cultivating a love of reading in all of my students. I love to read, and am on a mission to have a community of motivated readers in my classroom! Archives
