After editing their work, students made a "fancy" copy of their writing that included a cover and title. Finally, students had the opportunity to share and celebrate their work with the other first grade students in Mrs. Riordan's and Mr. Moskowitz's class. As students shared their work, they discussed what they liked about each other's writing and what they wanted to try in their own writing next time.
Over the past few weeks students have been finishing up their work in writing "small moments." As this writing unit came to end students picked one piece of writing that they wanted to "publish." Before writers could publish their work they first needed to become editors. As editors, first graders edited their own work as well as peer edited a friend's work. As editors, they were checking for 1) "Does this writing make sense?" 2) "Is there enough detail?" and 3) "Is there correct spelling and punctuation?" After editing their work, students made a "fancy" copy of their writing that included a cover and title. Finally, students had the opportunity to share and celebrate their work with the other first grade students in Mrs. Riordan's and Mr. Moskowitz's class. As students shared their work, they discussed what they liked about each other's writing and what they wanted to try in their own writing next time. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday December 10th, and Wednesday December 17th. If you cannot meet on either of these days please let me know a day that you are available to meet before or after school. Phone conferences are also available to parents.

In November we spent time integrating pumpkins into our math, science and reading classes. We began with a schema chart to share information that we already knew about pumpkins. Then, after reading several non-fiction books about pumpkins students created pumpkin vocabulary posters. After that, students measured and weighed small, individual pumpkins using non-standard units of measure. First, they measured the circumference of their pumpkin using paperclips, and then they weighed their pumpkins in a scale using marbles. Thank you to Mrs. Demerjian for helping students with this project! After students finished measuring their pumpkins, we compared and contrasted students pumpkin data using graphs. We completed this unit with an art project, as students transformed their pumpkins into turkey centerpieces!

All About Mrs. SpidleHello Nathaniel Morton families! My name is Mrs. Spidle and this is my third year teaching at Nathaniel Morton Elementary. Before I joined the fabulous team at NMES, I taught first grade at Federal Furnace for three years and kindergarten for six years at Sacred Heart. I love working with children and believe in cementing their love for learning at a young age. I have an undergraduate degree in early childhood education and a master's degree in reading education. As an early childhood educator, I love teaching all subjects, but my first love is reading! I believe in cultivating a love of reading in all of my students. I love to read, and am on a mission to have a community of motivated readers in my classroom! Archives
