First Grade has been having a ton of fun lately! Earlier this month we started studying pumpkins. After creating our schema chart together, and reading non-fiction books about pumpkins, we decided to share what we learned about pumpkin vocabulary through drawings. Ask your children to tell you about the parts of a pumpkin such as the skin, stem, rib, pulp, etc. Then, first grade incorporated Math by weighing and measuring the circumference of their own individual pumpkin! A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Pisano for helping out with this in the classroom! We graphed students results, and discussed whose pumpkin was the heaviest/lightest, biggest/smallest. Students concluded this unit with a little bit of fun, as they painted their own pumpkin to take home! Then, to celebrate Halloween, students began by making ghost counters using Lima beans. Students used these counters to help them complete Halloween addition problems. Afterwards students completed a science experiment. The question they were trying to answer? How can we make our paper ghosts spin? Students made their hypothesis and graphed their guesses. Then we tested our ghosts. After students discovered their answer, they had the opportunity to create their own spinning ghosts! Happy Halloween!

All About Mrs. SpidleHello Nathaniel Morton families! My name is Mrs. Spidle and this is my third year teaching at Nathaniel Morton Elementary. Before I joined the fabulous team at NMES, I taught first grade at Federal Furnace for three years and kindergarten for six years at Sacred Heart. I love working with children and believe in cementing their love for learning at a young age. I have an undergraduate degree in early childhood education and a master's degree in reading education. As an early childhood educator, I love teaching all subjects, but my first love is reading! I believe in cultivating a love of reading in all of my students. I love to read, and am on a mission to have a community of motivated readers in my classroom! Archives
